This renovation of a 19th century workingmen’s cottage in Auckland’s Bond Street is envisioned as a reinvention of the villa as an urban form through the synthesis of old and new. From the street, the view maintains a typical turn-of-the-century cottage; yet the juxtaposing elements of black and white. horizontal and vertical denotes a language of the modern aesthetic. The two halves of the age of the cottage and the modernity of the extension is evident, yet harmoniously conjured with the transition subtly signaled by a short flight of steps.

Designing the building around the landscape was a key aspect in expressing the importance of the outdoors as the interior spaces. The intent to maximise the small garden space was strategised by extending the living and dining area to the outdoor space as the culmination of the journey through the house. Even a minimal piece of courtyard allows progress and sequence around the site, a testament to the fact that it is not simply about the entrance and the backyard.
