Casa Almorah is a contemporary take on the familiar language of the English Cottage tradition – a common housing type in this part of Auckland. This new house takes the whimsy of the cottage house and amplifies certain features to create an intriguing and abstract grace. The home’s long plan is orientated to the sun, a move that also served to create an elegant street frontage. The vertical drama imposed through over-scale chimneys is heightened again through ‘sheared-off’ gable-roof forms; one such vertical slice allows space for a pool courtyard that is reminiscent of Sir Miles Warren’s Selby in Havelock North. Within the building the steep pitched roofs translate into lofty living areas, while subtle level changes accommodate the grade of the sloping site and bring definition to the interior spaces.
