This weekend home in Matakana, for a family with young children, shows that ‘garden-to-table’ need not necessarily mean socks, sandals and walk shorts and proves again that the courtyard house, with its potential for shelter and privacy, is an underused typology. This house has a complex spatial articulation with interlocking volumes to create a series of courtyards. The spaces are further delineated by the deep roof structure with its exposed rafters. Aesthetically, the house is brick, well grounded, a part of the land rather than a structure sitting atop it. The connection with the landscape goes from formal to conceptual through an extruded vegetable garden that builds the concept of organic dining right into the house.
